I thought this years Cheltenham Celebration of Craftmanship was a
bit of a mixed bag, but one of the stand-out pieces was Alardus van den Bosch's Cheetah coffee table. Sadly photographs don't do justice to the extraordinary patterning on the top, but the effect is a marquetry whirlpool of leaves in yellow and black at the top.
It was encouraging to see a contempory approach to marquetry and its use in modern furniture like this.
The result puts a smile on your face and a tingle up the spine, something which I have found to be all too rare at this show over the years.
